2023 Spring Concert: March 17-18
Exploring intersections with neurodiversity, mental health, and queer identity.
Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus presents its 2023 spring concert, unSEEN, on March 17 & 18 at 7:30pm at Westwood Lutheran Church in St. Louis Park.
The program for unSEEN will feature a wide range of repertoire, including “For the Caregivers” by Robert Cohen (re-voiced by TCGMC Artistic Director, Dr. Gerald Gurss), “A Different Kind of Love Song” made popular by Cher, “I Love You More” by friend of TCGMC, Ann Hampton Callaway, “The Light I Cannot See” by singing member, Brian Foy, and more!
This concert features guest artist, and renowned mezzo-soprano, Laurie Rubin. In addition to her vast singing accomplishments, Laurie is a writer, motivational speaker, and educator. Blind since birth, she is the author of Do You Dream In Color?: Insights from a Girl Without Sight, published by Penguin Random House for teen and young adult audiences. Laurie is also co-founder of Hawaii’s Ohana Arts, having done so with her wife and sister-in-law in 2010 to provide high quality training and performing opportunities, and a safe space for children and teens to be themselves.
In addition to Laurie, TCGMC is excited to partner with singers from Roosevelt HS in Minneapolis, and Central HS in St. Paul (Alex Rack and Alex Ferderer, directors, respectively). These collaborations represent further development of TCGMC’s high school partnership program and a deeper investment in building community.
This concert explores neurodiversity, and mental health, which includes Autism, Alzheimers and suicide as subject matter throughout the performance. Though TCGMC feels it’s important to talk (and sing) about these topics in order to shed light on what is so often unseen, we also understand that it can negatively affect those who have experienced them first hand. If you, or someone you love is one of these individuals, please know that TCGMC sees you and supports you.
