2023 Pride Concert: June 16-17

The Music of Whitney Houston. Need we say more?

Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus presents its 2023 Pride concert, and IIIIIIII…, on June 16-17, at 7:30pm at Ted Mann Concert Hall on the University of Minnesota campus.

The repertoire will be, wait for it, entirely music made famous by the one and only, Whitney Houston. Join us for an evening of songs and stories paying homage to one of America’s most celebrated vocalists!

From the Artistic Director, Dr. Gerald Gurss:

In the 2022 movie, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” producer Clive Davis asks Whitney Houston what kind of songs she likes. She replies, “Great big songs.” Much like our LGBTQ+ community, nothing she did was understated. In addition to being an unmatched vocal force, she was also a generational bridge. She began her career singing background vocals for artists such as Chaka Khan and Jermaine Jackson. Contemporary black female artists such as Beyoncé, Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, and Jennifer Hudson have all spoken about Whitney being one of their great inspirations. Hudson says, “I learned from Whitney the difference between being able to sing and knowing how to sing.” Her story was one of persistence and struggle – – one with which LGBTQ+ people are quite familiar.

Don’t miss “Higher Love,” I’m Your Baby Tonight,” “The Greatest Love of All” and, of course, “I Will Always Love You” performed by the singers of TCGMC, principal accompanist, Timothy De Prey, and with guest musicians. Experience the transformative power of music and support TCGMC as they showcase their talent and commitment to the LGBTQ+ community.

The Saturday, June 17, performance is ASL interpreted.
