Chauvin Verdict Statement
Yesterday (April 20, 2021), a Minneapolis jury made a historic decision and found Derek Chauvin guilty on three counts for the murder of George Floyd. This verdict shows George Floyd’s family, and our world, that his life mattered and the lives of all Black Americans matter. However, this verdict is still not justice. True “liberty and justice for all” is still not a reality in our country.
Accountability is the first step towards justice. While it’s shortsighted to consider the verdict in this single case “justice” for anyone, it brought accountability in a way that has eluded our community far too many times. Enduring and significant societal change is the ultimate goal, and we must embrace this moment and this opportunity.
Minnesota’s Attorney General, and lead prosecutor for the case, Keith Ellison, made a profound statement after the verdict was announced: “no one can do everything, but everyone can do something.” TCGMC will continue to raise our voices to that.
