Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus includes outreach performances as part of its mission of gay men building community through music. In the spring of 2015, we toured to St. Peter and Marshall, Minnesota. After the Marshall performance, one of our audience members gave us this note: “Since we moved to Marshall, we have met gays and lesbians but the majority are so afraid to come out. This is a very, very conservative rural area and the fact that you came to Marshall was overwhelming for some. The local high school is in the process of starting a Gay Straight Alliance group. One of the students was very moved by your performance.
“You more than likely gave many people joy, hope and courage that night.”
Now celebrating our 37th season of entertainment worth coming out for, the goals of the Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus continue to be three-fold: 1) to achieve a high level of musical integrity; 2) to give voice and visibility to a cultural minority; and 3) to confront homophobia and intolerance and affect positive social change.
As a prominent Minnesota LGBT arts organization, Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus provides a safe and welcoming environment for gay men to form community through the performance of music.
With a roster of over 150 volunteer singers, the Chorus produces and present a full concert season every year. The Chorus performs its concert series at Ted Mann Concert Hall in Minneapolis and is also featured at a number of other special appearances and outreach programs (schools, churches, universities, festivals) locally, throughout the Midwest and the nation.
The Chorus provides its members with rewarding musical performance experiences that celebrate diversity and use music as a way to transform, educate and heal. The Chorus promotes social justice and the elimination of homophobia and intolerance through our regular season of performances and community outreach performances across Minnesota and the Upper Midwest. Our strategic vision is to be a dynamic choral leader, changing lives through the performance of significant music.
37 years ago, gays and lesbians did not form choruses for the primary purpose of moving audiences to laughter or tears. They got together because they wanted to have fun, they wanted to sing. They sought sanctuary from bigotry and discrimination. During the AIDS crisis, they discovered they could form a community and support each other.
But today, TCGMC’s vision is simply this: we see a world that celebrates equality and inclusion, inspired to action by the LGBT choral movement and the members of this Chorus.
One of the founders of the New York Gay Men’s Chorus said, “If you want to sing, you join a chorus. But if you want to change the world, you join an LGBT chorus.” There is still much work to be done but we look to our vision of the future with the clear knowledge that what we do works and it has been working for 36 years. Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus has changed hearts. It has changed minds. It has saved lives. It builds community.
